Description

A Swayambhu lingam serves as the Shiva Lingam at the shrine. The lingam is a naturally occurring stalagmite formation that can be seen inside a 40 m (130 ft) high cave at an elevation of 3,888 m on Amarnath Mountain, which has a peak elevation of 5,186 meters (17,014 ft) (12,756 ft). The stalagmite is created when water drops that fall from the cave’s roof onto its floor freeze, causing the ice to grow vertically upward. Stalagmites come in a variety of varieties. Here, the stalagmites that are thought of as the lingam, or physical representation of Shiva, take the form of a solid dome. Additionally, two smaller stalagmites of Parvati and Ganesha can be located here.

According to folklore, God Shiva told Goddess Parvati the story of Amar Katha in the Amarnath Cave but wanted to keep it a secret. He, therefore, left all of his friends behind. Nandi, his riding companion, the bull, was left at Pahalgam, as were the moon atop his head, the snake around his neck, the five necessities of life he carried, Panchtarini, and even his son, Lord Ganesha, at Mahaguna Top.

He realized that the Goddess Parvati had dozed off while he was narrating, and a parrot had been listening to the entire time. The Lord became enraged by this and threw his Trishul to kill the parrot. The parrot entered the saint’s wife’s womb to preserve himself. The infant subsequently developed into a well-known sage.

Presently, the cave has turned out to be one of the holiest shrines in India. The Indian Army, the Central Government, and the State Government Police Forces, along with NGOs and government-provided services, work to give the devotees the best facilities possible. There are stands and paddling grounds (pandals) where food is always available. The Shri Amarnath Yatra trust, which provides services like power supply, telecommunication, firewood, etc., is largely responsible for effectively organizing the amenities required to stay there.
